colloquial pr. [xie3]; CL:滴[di1],片[pian4]

drop (丿) + vessel (皿) = blood offered in a bowl

In ancient script, 血 showed a ritual vessel (皿) with a drop of blood inside it, used in sacrificial offerings. The 丿 stroke represents that drop, making this one of the more literal pictographic compositions in Chinese.
