丷 is a written shape rather than a word: two short slanting strokes leaning apart at the top of a character. In many characters it is the old 八 "divide, split apart" written small and flat, as in 关 and 单; in others it is simply what became of side strokes in the original picture — the flames flying off a fire in 火, the loose grains beside the stalk in 米, the horns of a sheep in 羊, the specks of metal in 金.
