The old graph was a simple side view of a rock face that juts out overhead — a flat top edge with the stone falling away below it, the kind of ledge you could stand under for shelter. The modern shape keeps exactly that picture: one horizontal stroke for the overhang, one falling stroke down the left for the cliff wall, with open space beneath where a person or thing can sit (as in 仄, a person squeezed under a cliff). Separately, 厂 was adopted as the simplified form of the character for factory or workshop, where the roof-like stroke reads as a big shed.
