忄
marks a character as naming a feeling · Kangxi radical 61 · variant of 心
marks a character as naming a feeling, mood, or state of mind
The full form 心 is a picture of an actual heart: a rounded sac with the vessels at the top drawn as strokes flicking out to the sides. When the heart is squeezed into the left-hand side of a character it is rewritten upright as 忄, a vertical stroke for the body of the organ with two short flanking dashes standing in for those vessels. So the three strokes of 忄 are simply the sideways heart stood on end and thinned out to fit, and characters carrying it — 懊 to regret, 懦 faint-hearted, 懒 lazy, 慢 slow — all describe something going on inside a person.
