石 began as a picture of a lump of rock lying under an overhanging cliff. The modern shape still shows both parts: the sloping 厂 on the upper left is the cliff face, and the small box 口 tucked beneath it is the rock itself. When 石 sits on the left of a character it squeezes narrow, as in 碾 (stone roller) and 磁 (magnetic ore), and it can also sit underneath, as in 磨 (to grind) and 磊 (three stones piled up). A handful of characters such as 拓 and 柘 use 石 only for its sound.
