marks words to do with grain crops — growing cereals, harvesting, and grain-related measure and value words
禾 was a drawing of a whole cereal plant: a stalk with roots below, leaves to the side, and at the top a ripe ear drooping under its own weight. In the modern shape you can still read it top to bottom — the short slanting stroke at the very top is that bent, heavy ear of grain, the horizontal line and vertical stem are the stalk, and the two spreading legs are leaves or roots. When 禾 sits on the left of a character, as in 稻, 移 and 稀, it squeezes narrow but keeps the drooping top stroke; in 香 and 秦 it lies across the top instead.
