The original graph drew a hunting or fishing net: two upright poles or handles with mesh strung between them, the crossing threads shown as a grid inside the frame. 罓 is one of several squeezed-down variants of 网, and the modern shape keeps the outer frame while the mesh has thinned to a couple of short strokes inside. In characters it usually sits on top and is more often written 罒, a flattened net lying over whatever is being caught or covered.
