marks a character as having to do with boats, ships, and their parts
舟 began as a picture of a small boat seen from the side or above — a hollow hull with cross-braces or planks inside. In the modern shape you can still read the long sweeping stroke as the curved bottom of the hull, the two short dots inside as the braces or the passengers, and the top stroke as the raised prow. As a side element it squeezes narrow, and it names ships (航, 艇, 艘) and their parts: the helm 舵, the bow 艏, the stern 艄. In 盘 and 般 it sits underneath and its boat sense is no longer felt.
