血
contributes the sense of blood — bleeding · Kangxi radical 143
contributes the sense of blood — bleeding, bloodshed, and by extension smearing or staining with blood
The old graph showed a shallow ritual dish (皿) holding a drop of sacrificial blood. In the modern form the bowl is still the lower part, and the short stroke 丿 leaning over its left rim is that drop of blood. Since the blood was offered in ceremonies, characters built on it can involve consecrating or smearing with blood, as in 衅, or plain bleeding, as in 衄 (nosebleed). In others, such as 洫 and 恤, 血 only supplies the sound.
