contributes the sense of clothing · Kangxi radical 145

contributes the sense of clothing, cloth and garments (and sometimes just the sound yī)

衣 is a picture of a garment laid out or worn, seen from the front: the small stroke on top is the neckband, and the strokes below are the two flaps of the robe crossing over each other with the sleeves spreading to the sides. In the modern shape you can still read the collar at the top and the crossed lapels at the bottom, ending in the two spreading legs of the sleeves. When 衣 is squeezed into a character it often splits apart, with the collar riding up on top and the sleeve part 𧘇 dropping to the bottom, as in 衰, 衮, 袤 and 裂; on the left side of a character it flattens into 衤. In 依 and 铱 it is there only for its sound.
