襾 is drawn as a flat horizontal stroke laid across the top with a boxed shape hanging beneath it, and the two short strokes inside are usually read as the edges of a cloth or lid draping down over what it hides. The exact object the original graph depicted is unclear, but the picture of a cover sitting over a thing has been attached to it from early on. In actual characters it almost never keeps this full shape: it flattens into the 覀 top you see in 要 and 覆, where the lid stroke and the drooping sides are squeezed into a low wide box.
