contributes the sense of seeing · Character component

contributes the sense of seeing, looking and coming into view (and often just supplies the sound in characters like 岘, 苋, 蚬)

The old graph drew a kneeling or standing person with one huge eye set on top of the body — the eye was blown up out of proportion to say that seeing, not the person, was the point. In the traditional form 見 you can still read that picture directly: 目 (eye) sitting above 儿, the two legs of a person. The simplified 见 squashes the eye down to a small box with a stroke inside, but the two legs underneath survive unchanged, so the figure is still there. In 觉, 览, 观 and 觅 it sits at the bottom as the seeing part, while in 现, 视 and 规 it stands at the side.
