contributes the sense of going · Kangxi radical 156

contributes the sense of going, running, and fast movement on foot

The old form of 走 showed a person running with arms swinging out to one side, drawn above a foot 止 to make the motion explicit. Over time the swinging figure was flattened into something that now looks like 土, and the foot below was smoothed into the sweeping stroke that ends the character. So in 走 you can still read a body on top and a foot underneath, and characters built on it — 起 to rise, 超 to overtake, 越 to cross over, 赶 to chase — all describe ways of moving.
