辟
usually supplies the sound bì/pì · Character component
usually supplies the sound bì/pì, often with an accompanying idea of splitting off or being set apart
辟 was drawn as a kneeling human body (the 尸 on the upper left), a small mark or mouth shape 口 beside it, and 辛, a tool used for cutting and marking — together a scene of judicial punishment, hence its old senses of law and of cutting away. All three pieces are still visible in the modern 辟: body top-left, 口 tucked under it, 辛 on the right. In compounds 辟 mostly carries the sound, but the cutting-apart sense shows through in 劈 to hack, 擘 thumb (the finger that splits off from the rest), and in the notions of separation behind 避 to avoid and 僻 remote.
