contributes the sense of going, moving along a road, and travel by foot

The old graph combined a picture of a crossroads or stretch of road with a footprint below it — a foot set down on a path. In the full form 辵 you can still see the road-strokes on top and the foot 止 underneath. When it wraps around another character it is squeezed into 辶, where the small tick and the long sweeping stroke are the flattened road, and the character it carries sits where the foot once stepped.
