contributes the sense of pleasant smell and fragrance
香 originally showed a grain plant, 禾, above a mouth with a mark in it, 甘 "sweet" — the aroma of cooked millet rising to someone tasting it. In the modern character the 禾 on top is still the clear picture of a grain stalk with a drooping head, while the 甘 underneath has flattened into what now looks like 日. Wherever 香 appears, as in 馥 and 馨, it is carrying that smell of food and sweetness into words for fragrance.
