高
contributes the sense of tall or elevated · Kangxi radical 189
contributes the sense of tall or elevated, and very often just the sound gao/hao
The old graph of 高 drew a tall building raised on a mound: a pointed roof on top, a room below it, and a doorway in the base. You can still read that picture straight down the modern character — the 亠 lid is the roof, the first 口 is the upper chamber, and the 冂 with 口 inside is the raised base with its gate. In most of the characters here 高 is borrowed only for sound, as in 搞, 稿 and 蒿, though the height idea still shows through in 嵩 (a lofty mountain) and 篙 (a long punting pole).
