contributes the sense of the color yellow
The old form of 黃 seems to show a standing person seen from the front with a round jade ornament hanging at the waist, though the picture is debated and some read it as a person with a swollen belly or a burning arrow. Whatever it first showed, the graph was very early taken over to write the color word "yellow," and that is the only job it does now. In the modern shape you can still trace the outline: a flat top stroke and 廿-like shoulders for the head and arms, the boxed 田-shaped middle where the pendant hung, and two short legs 八 at the bottom.
