西红柿

west (西) + red (红) + persimmon tree (柿) = tomato
Chinese named the tomato the 'western red persimmon' when it arrived from abroad — it looked like a persimmon but came from the west and ripened bright red. 木 grounds 柿 in the plant world; 市 just contributes the sound shì.
我喜欢吃西红柿炒鸡蛋。
wǒ xǐ huān chī xī hóng shì chǎo jī dàn。
I like to eat tomatoes stir-fried with eggs.
这些西红柿又红又甜，很好吃。
zhè xiē xī hóng shì yòu hóng yòu tián，hěn hǎo chī。
These tomatoes are both red and sweet, and very tasty.
