marks words for dogs and other four-legged wild animals · Kangxi radical 94 · variant of 犬

marks words for dogs and other four-legged wild animals, and by extension animal-like temperaments

The full form 犬 is a picture of a dog seen from the side, standing on its hind legs with its tail curling up over its back — the little stroke at the top right is that tail. When the character is squeezed into the left-hand slot of a compound it flattens into 犭: the short upper stroke is the head and ears, the long curving stroke is the back and hind leg. Because dogs were the familiar four-legged beast, this shape spread to lions, monkeys, deer, hedgehogs and the like (狮, 猴, 狍, 猬), and then to wild, unruly behavior (猖獗, 狯).
